Oahu: Day Tour of Pearl Harbor, Arizona Memorial, and USS Missouri
Experience a chilling and pivotal part of U.S. history while visiting prominent WW II sites that changed the face of America. Round out your day of discovery with stops at popular attractions in and around Honolulu.
Begin this historic tour at the spot where U.S. involvement in WW II began—Pearl Harbor. Pause for a moment of silence and reflection at the USS Arizona Memorial, where more than 1,000 sailors lost their lives on December 7, 1941. The new memorial floats gently atop the sunken grave of the USS Arizona. If you look closely into the water, oil leaking from the wreckage appears as “black tears” on the surface. The site of the Japanese surrender-—the USS Missouri—now sits alongside the Arizona and marks the end of the U.S. participation in the war.
Continue on to downtown Honolulu with a visit to the Kawaiaha’o Church, known as the “Westminster Abbey of the Pacific.” Ready your camera for shots of the only royal palace on American soil—Iolani Palace—and continue on to the King Kamehameha statue, Honolulu Hale, and the Mission Houses Museum. A stop at the Punchbowl Crater, also known as “Hill of Sacrifice,” offers up valuable bits of the area's geologic history as it was formed some 100,000 years ago during volcanic activity.
