Venture out on a 33-mile (53-km) excursion through the little-traveled backroads of Kauai. From the top of Kilohana Crater, wind into the engulfing beauty—a dirt road through dense vegetation, an open pasture spilling out into shores, and a beyond-blue ocean.
Details
Gaze upon expansive views of the island of Kauai from atop Kilohana Crater rim, rising 1,250 feet (381 m) above the surrounding island. Carve down the gentle slope of the crater, into waving fields of sugarcane, fragrant orchards of guava trees, and rustling forests of bamboo.
Wild orchids alongside the road bob in the breeze as you travel past. During your journey through this remote side of Kauai your guide offers lively and informed commentary and relays some of the rich history of the Hawaiian Islands—how the islands were formed, the story of the Polynesians who settled here, and the lifestyle of the peoples living here today.
Travel through the sugarcane tunnel, a remnant of the island’s role in World War II. See the corn and coffee farms that form the agricultural backbone of the islands. End the trip at the Mahaulepu coastline, which offers pristine beaches, grassy hillocks, and tall rock formations lining the ocean as though looking out to sea.
