Experience the awesome spectacle of Pele's creation. Watch as the elemental forces of fire and water do battle at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, a World Heritage site.

Details

Travel up the coast over desolate lava flows and then along rolling pastures.  Dramatic and diverse landscapes including ranchland, sub-alpine dry forest, and rainforest mark your journey.  Keep on the lookout for cinder cones, lava flows, lava tubes, and kipuka along the way.  After a short break and continental-style breakfast-fresh local fruit, baked goods, 100% Kona coffee, tea, and hot chocolate-it's time to begin the ascent to the summit of Kilauea and the lush entrance to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is an inspiring, precious place and is listed as both a World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere preserve. Once at the park explore a splendid native rainforest, visit a lava tube, discover remarkable volcanic formations, and experience the incredible diversity of geography and climate.

Through detailed geologic and natural history interpretation, short walks and driving, you'll learn about the world's most active volcano. A picnic lunch is served en route during your adventure through the park. Your guides lead you on a couple of short trail hikes of less than 1 mile (3 km) and into a lava tube! The trails are relatively level, but expect to descend approximately 30 feet (9.2 meters) in the lava tube. Then it's time to head back; the bus travels along the Hamakua Coast and through Waimea before returning to Kona.
